overview

In today's fast-paced world, many individuals struggle to prioritize their hobbies and passions. Despite an inherent talent for doodling and sketching, a lack of confidence and skill often hinders self-expression. This project seeks to harmonize technology and human creativity, providing a liberating space for individuals to unleash their artistic potential. By offering a platform that encourages the free flow of ideas, we aspire to rekindle the joy of creative expression.

Context

While I was doodling in my sketchbook, my roommate told me she likes to draw too but doesn't have much time or confidence. That got me thinking about how to help her bring out her creative side. I want to explore and find simple ways to encourage people to draw more and feel more confident about it.

How art activities help

Emotional Expression

Art provides a non-verbal way for individuals to express complex emotions and feelings that may be challenging to convey through words.

Stress Reduction

Engaging in art activities can act as a form of meditation, reducing stress levels and promoting a sense of calm and relaxation.

Self Discovery

Art helps in self-discovery by allowing individuals to express their inner thoughts and emotions creatively.

Boots Mood

Engaging in art activities can boost mood by fostering a sense of accomplishment and reducing stress

Therapeutic Benefits

Art therapy is widely used to support individuals dealing with mental health challenges, offering a therapeutic outlet for self-reflection and healing.

Provides Calmness

Creating art provides calmness by promoting mindfulness and offering a therapeutic outlet for relaxation.

Changes over time

In the past, artists relied on physical galleries and local connections to showcase their work. However, Today, social media and digital tools have globalized art, making it easier to reach a broader audience.

AI and virtual technologies have expanded creative possibilities, transforming how art is created and experienced.

Online platforms and blockchain have revolutionized art sales, offering artists new ways to monetize their work beyond traditional markets.

How people perceive AI Art

The following data is from an article by Academy of Animated art written by Jasmine Katatikar in 2023, where they talk about a survey conducted among 2000 americans related to art and AI

The use of AI in art stirs diverse opinions. Some argue that AI-generated art lacks the artist's personal touch and is ethically questionable. Conversely, others see AI as a tool that can add a unique and intriguing dimension to their creative process. Can we perhaps bridge this gap by exploring how AI can be integrated thoughtfully, respecting artistic integrity, and considering ways it might enhance rather than replace individual expression.

Insights from Competitive Analysis

Using AI to create image from scratch has been there in market but there are only few apps using AI to help non-artists improve their skills.

Text to image options are majorly used by AI platforms.

Only 3 out of 12 apps use AR anchors to make the learning process interactive.

Only 2 apps uses challenges and prompts to keep users active and engaged

The AI platforms have a lot to offer but they are not easy to use for a non-tech person

I conducted an online survey using Google Forms, with participation from 32 individuals. The results revealed that 62.5% of respondents actively engage in art activities, while 37.5% do not currently participate in such activities. Apart from this I conducted interviews with 13 participants from age group 22-32 years to gather some qualitative insights.

User Interview Objective

To determine the number of people participating in art activities and explore the reasons for their involvement or lack thereof.

To gain insights into their perspectives on the use of AI in art.

To understand their motivations for engaging in these activities.

To identify the challenges faced by non-artists.

To assess participants' experiences with art-related apps and platforms.

Task Details

I organized an engaging activity during the interviews wherein participants were given a sheet of paper and instructed to draw within a 5-minute time frame. The objective of the activity was to understand if participants perform better in an open space or with a little start, and whether the results of the activity change their perception about usage of AI. Two prompts were presented to the interviewees:

Create a drawing on the blank paper based on whatever comes to your mind.

Utilize the 5 circles already present on the paper to draw whatever comes to your mind.

Participants Quote

Oh my God!! It is better than the original

It's really interesting and super exciting to see. It was beyond my imagination that it would come out like this.

I really liked it. Is this my drawing??

This is cool. As a designer I can get various ideas from a simple sketch.

AI needs specific interpretation. I like the second artwork a lot. It's really nice. Expressions are cute it became cookies with coffees. I really like it. It would help me imagination a lot.

This is cool. I definitely want to learn more about it

Wooww. It's amazing for me. A simple line changed to something nice with colors and shadows and everything.

I don't want AI to do my job.

This is nice. It gives me a base to work on. More like an inspiration

Insights from interview

Reasons for engagement

Participants turned to drawing as a means of expressing their emotions, particularly during times of stress, or as a way to pass the time when bored.

FREQUENCY

Many individuals who used to engage in drawing, sketching, or doodling have experienced a decline or complete cessation of their involvement due to busy schedules or a lack of motivation.

Inspiration Source

The majority of participants tended to draw elements inspired by nature or aspects from their daily lives that held personal significance to them.

platform Choice

Artists tend to prefer creating digital artwork due to its convenience and accessibility, while non-artists often opt for handmade creations as it provides them with a greater sense of control.

Difference

Artists expressed a greater comfort level when given a blank sheet of paper, as opposed to working within confined spaces in prompt 2. Conversely, non-artists tended to feel more at ease with restricted spaces for drawing.

Views on AI Art

The majority initially expressed a reluctance to use AI features, but upon witnessing the transformation of their simple line drawings into impressive artworks, their perspectives underwent a positive shift.

Concept generation

To develop the concept, I began by creating personas. Following this, I conducted an open card sorting session with five participants and used the results to design the information architecture.

Usability testing and SUS scoring

5 participants took part in the in-person moderated usability testing session with the think aloud approach. Below are the 3 tasks that were given to them.

Task 1-

Imagine you have drawn a sketch of an artwork on paper. Now, you want to transform this sketch into a polished digital artwork using our app. And lastly, you want to share it with friends once it is completed.

Task 2-

You got an amazing artwork derived from your sketch using the AI, and now you want to show the saved work to your friend in-person. How will you do that?

Task 3-

You want to collaborate with your friends on the platform to create something together. How will you do that? Once you start the process, complete the below mentioned steps.

Open the app and join the collaborative session with your friends.

Turn on the "Smooth Lines" feature to ensure the lines are smooth as you draw.

Use the drawing tools to add a rectangle to your workspace.

Change from single view to group view to see the work of your friends.

Use the chat feature to communicate with your friends about the drawing.

Complete the drawing session and save your work.

Task 1 Issues

Issue 1

The users land on the chat screen once they share their work but instead what they were hoping for was either remain on the same screen of artwork, as to do other actions or go on home screen.

Task 3 issues

Issue 1

Majorly users tried to start the collaboration for prompt 2 from the create button or tried to find it in the homepage. Only 1 out of 5 users went to explore page to look for collaborative prompts to start a session.

Issue 2

Confusion with 2 buttons in the collaboration cards. Users said they expected to just start the session and then on next screen they can invite their friends. But they couldn’t understand if they should press “Invite friends” CTA first or “Start now”.

Task 3 Issues

Issue 3

5/5 users faced the issue while adding a rectangle to draw. The current interaction is drag and drop a shape. However, they expected it to be something like word or paint, where the rectangle gets added on art-board and has the option to modify it.

Explore different options to start from

Providing users with the flexibility to choose their preferred method, allowing them to either draw on paper and capture it through a photo or directly create digital art on the canvas.

Enabling users to either capture a new photo or choose from their gallery, with additional options to adjust and crop the selected image as needed.

AI enhancement

Granting users the flexibility to enhance their drawings with an AI feature offering five style options. After selecting their preferred artwork, users can add captions, share it with friends, save it, or include it in their journal.

Fun collaboration

Users have the opportunity to engage in fun challenges that serve as a creative catalyst, fostering a collaborative environment where they can enjoy the process with friends. This allows for communication and sharing of works, enhancing the overall collaborative and fun experience.

Personal diary

Users can view their saved artworks and access a daily journal, providing them with a tangible sense of achievement and a visual representation of their overall progress over time.
